Omar Bin Al-Khattab Mosque

Omar Bin Al-Khattab Mosque is a house of worship in Dumat al-Jandal featuring a distinctive minaret with a pyramidal base and spiral design. The structure is built primarily from brick materials and stands directly next to Marid Castle.

The building was constructed during the Umayyad Caliphate period and received major renovation by the Saud family in the 1790s. That renovation resulted in a reorientation of the prayer hall that shaped the structure as it stands today.

The mosque is named after Rashidun caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, linking it to early Islamic leadership. When you enter the building, this naming choice reinforces its role as a place of religious significance in the community.

The site is located next to Marid Castle in Al Jawf Province and together they form a connected architectural complex. Visitors can explore both structures as part of a single visit to the area.

The minaret here is considered the first and oldest of its kind in North Arabia, featuring an unusual spiral design. This construction method differs sharply from later minarets and makes it a notable example of early Islamic architecture.
