Hälsingland, Historical province in central Sweden

Hälsingland is a historical province in central Sweden with extensive forests and several river valleys winding through the hilly terrain. The landscape ranges from the Baltic Sea coast in the east to the mountain regions in the west and includes many lakes and forested ridges.

The earliest written mention appears in an Old English poem from the 9th century that refers to the local inhabitants as Hælsings. The area developed over the centuries through forestry and iron processing and later became part of Gävleborg and Jämtland counties.

The rooms inside the old farmhouses show hand-painted patterns on walls and ceilings, often with floral motifs and biblical scenes that visitors can view during guided tours. These painted chambers once served as celebration rooms for weddings and other occasions and remained closed most of the time in daily life.

Most visitor destinations are spread across the territory and require a car to move between the towns and the rural attractions. Summer months offer the best conditions for hiking and sightseeing, while winter is good for cross-country skiing and winter activities.

The two Dellen lakes formed about 90 million years ago from a meteorite impact and today create a connected water system amid the forested hills. This geological feature attracts hikers and nature enthusiasts who want to explore the circular shorelines and the clear water.
