Kiruna Municipality

The municipal territory extends over 20,715 square kilometers of Arctic landscape, containing mountains, forests, and more than 6,000 lakes across the region.

The municipality received its official status in 1908, following the rapid development of mining operations and the construction of railroad connections to Narvik.

The territory incorporates Finnish, Meänkieli, and Sami as recognized minority languages, reflecting the diverse heritage of its northern communities.

The municipal administration manages services for 22,433 residents across seven main localities, including Kiruna, Vittangi, and Jukkasjärvi, with mining as the primary industry.

The municipality contains Kebnekaise, reaching 2,104 meters as Sweden's highest mountain, and Esrange, the only civilian rocket base in Europe.
