Abisko research station, Research station in Kiruna Municipality, Sweden.
Abisko Research Station is a research facility on the southern shore of Lake Tornetraisk in northern Sweden, sitting about 385 meters above sea level. It contains laboratories, workspaces, beds for around 80 guests, and self-catering kitchens designed for extended stays.
The station began operations in 1903 and joined the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1935 as a research hub. This affiliation helped establish it as a major center for Arctic environmental studies.
Scientists from around the world come here to study climate change and Arctic ecosystems, creating a community focused on understanding this remote region. This international collaboration shapes daily life at the station and brings together researchers with shared environmental concerns.
The site offers comfortable facilities for extended visits with on-site lodging and kitchens for guests. Its position next to the national park makes it a good base for exploring and observing the Arctic landscape.
The facility maintains weather records going back to 1913, creating over 100 years of continuous Arctic data. These long-term measurements show changes in air temperature, soil conditions, rainfall, and UV radiation across more than a century.
