Carlanderska sjukhemmet

Carlanderska sjukhemmet is a private medical facility in Johanneberg, Gothenburg, housing multiple medical departments, operating rooms, and a pharmacy. The expansion completed in 2017 covers around 7,000 square meters and provides services ranging from pediatric care to specialized surgical procedures.

Christopher and Axel Carlander proposed establishing a healthcare institution modeled after Stockholm's Sophiahemmet in 1916, leading to the hospital's foundation in 1927. This founding marked the beginning of a medical facility that has continued to operate in the city since then.

The building displays a blend of national romantic and neoclassical architectural features that reflect how Swedish medical institutions were designed in the early 1900s. These design choices remain visible in its appearance and help define the character of the facility today.

Patients and visitors can access the facility during operating hours and should arrive with sufficient time to complete registration procedures. The building is designed to accommodate different mobility needs with appropriate entrances and facilities.

The site was formerly Galgbacken, an execution ground that operated from 1702 to 1809, before being transformed into a modern medical center. This striking contrast between its past use and present purpose marks an important shift in the location's story.
