Katterjåkk is a holiday village in northern Kiruna Municipality, made up of simple cabins and lodges with no permanent residents. The area sits surrounded by mountains and lakes, serving as a starting point for skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and fishing in both winter and summer months.
The railway from Kiruna to Narvik opened in 1903, with Katterjåkk serving as a stop for construction workers building the line. Between 2007 and 2009, the site grew into a modern holiday destination with additional cabins, a hotel, a store, and a restaurant.
Katterjåkk is managed by Friluftfrämjandet, an organization dedicated to outdoor activities, which shapes how the place is used and experienced. Winter brings crowds of skiers and snow enthusiasts, while summer sees fewer visitors passing through on hiking routes.
The easiest way to reach this location is by train between Kiruna and Narvik, which stops at a small station here. The journey takes about an hour from Kiruna or roughly 15 hours from Stockholm, with buses and the E10 road also available as options.
The Sami people have a deep connection to this region, and their traditions and crafts remain visible in local shops today, reflecting their heritage. Reindeer roam freely across the area and graze near hikers, with both males and females growing antlers.
