Coastal-Karst Statistical Region, Statistical region in southwestern Slovenia
The Coastal-Karst Statistical Region is an administrative area in southwestern Slovenia that stretches along the Adriatic Sea and includes the limestone Karst Plateau with many caves and underground channels. The territory encompasses eight municipalities with varying landscapes, from seaside towns to elevated plateau areas.
The region received its official designation as a statistical territory in 2005 when Slovenia reorganized its administrative divisions to improve regional development tracking. This restructuring helped focus attention on local needs and characteristics across the separate municipalities.
The region reflects a blend of Slovenian, Italian, and Mediterranean traditions visible in local celebrations, food, and building designs. These influences shape how people live and gather in the eight municipalities that make up the area.
The Port of Koper serves as the main maritime hub, connecting the region to international shipping routes and cargo operations. Visitors exploring the Karst Plateau should wear sturdy footwear since underground cave systems have uneven ground and slippery surfaces.
The Sečovlje Salt Pans produce sea salt using traditional methods that have been practiced since medieval times, creating mineral-rich crystals. This ancient craft remains one of the last of its kind along the Adriatic coast.
