The High Tatras extend for 40 miles along the border between Slovakia and Poland, featuring 300 measured peaks and numerous alpine valleys.
The name Tatras first appeared in written records from 999 AD when Bohemian Duke Boleslaus II mentioned them as Tritri montes in official documents.
The Górale people maintain their traditional ways of life in the mountain villages, with specific customs, architecture, and regional food specialties.
Visitors can access multiple ski resorts in Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, and Tatranská Lomnica in Slovakia, as well as Zakopane in Poland.
The mountain range contains Morskie Oko, the largest alpine lake in the Tatras, situated at 1,395 meters with surrounding peaks rising 1,000 meters above it.
