Gaplaňgyr Nature Reserve, Nature reserve at the southern spur of Ustyurt Plateau, Turkmenistan.
Gaplaňgyr Nature Reserve is a protected area in northern Turkmenistan that spreads across flat, elevated terrain. The landscape consists mainly of dry steppe with sparse vegetation and open grasslands that roll across the horizon.
The reserve was established in 1979 to protect native habitats from human interference. It later gained international recognition and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The reserve demonstrates Turkmenistan's dedication to protecting natural heritage through scientific research and environmental education programs for local communities.
Entry to the reserve requires special permits from local authorities. Visitors should prepare for harsh weather and remote terrain with limited facilities or amenities available.
The area is home to more than 140 bird species, including several migratory kinds that regularly rest there. Some of these species are rare or have disappeared elsewhere in Central Asia.
