Köýtendag Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Köýtendag District, Turkmenistan
Köýtendag Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Köýtendag Range in Turkmenistan, covering more than 270 square kilometers. The landscape is defined by mountain formations with varying elevations, from valleys to peaks exceeding 3000 meters.
The reserve was established in 1986 as a protected area, and was later expanded with four additional sanctuaries named Garlyk, Hojapil, Hojaburjybelent, and Hojagarawul. This designation enabled structured protection of distinct ecosystems across the region.
Local rangers and scientists work together to document and preserve traditional knowledge about the mountain ecosystems and wildlife patterns in the reserve.
Access to the area is restricted and requires prior permission from Turkmen authorities along with arrangements through authorized tour operators. The best time to visit is during moderate seasons when conditions for exploring are more favorable.
The area contains over 300 caves of significant geological importance that provide insights into Earth's history. It is also home to the Heptner's markhor, a rare mountain goat species adapted to these extreme high-altitude environments.
