Памятник Махтумкули

Памятник Махтумкули, Monument to poet in central Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

The stone sculpture depicts Makhtumkuli sitting with a manuscript, positioned on a pedestal made of natural rocks in the middle of a square.

The monument, completed in 1971, stands at the former location of the world's first Bahai temple, which was destroyed during the 1948 earthquake.

The monument celebrates Makhtumkuli, an 18th-century poet who revolutionized Turkmen literature by introducing local language and abandoning Arabic-Persian metrics.

Located on Makhtumkuli Avenue opposite the Ministry of Internal Affairs building, the monument is surrounded by fountains and public gardens.

Armenian stone carvers S. Grigoryan and G. Oganesyan contributed to creating the grey basalt figure that emerges from natural stone formations.
