The main museum of Turkmenistan, National museum in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan
The National Museum of Turkmenistan is a national collection in Ashgabat with seven permanent galleries distributed across three main sections. The exhibition spans natural history, scientific development, and historical collections containing over 500,000 objects including ancient artifacts and historical documents.
The museum opened in November 1998 and brought together collections from former institutions dedicated to history, ethnography, and the arts. This consolidation created a central archive preserving the region's past and cultural development.
Traditional carpets, musical instruments, and jewelry on display reflect the daily life and craftsmanship traditions of the region. Visitors can see how these objects have been made and used across generations.
The museum is located near the Ashgabat Flagpole and opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Guided tours in multiple languages help visitors navigate the extensive collections more efficiently.
One third of the museum space features presidential portraits showing encounters with citizens, sports activities, and international meetings. This extensive gallery occupies a substantial portion of the permanent exhibition.
