Ahal Region, Province in southern Turkmenistan
Ahal Region spreads across southern Turkmenistan with mountains, foothills, and plains stretching along the Kopet Dag range and into the Karakum desert. The landscape transitions from higher elevations in the south to flatter terrain in the north.
The area was formerly called Ashgabat Oblast before being renamed Ahal Region following Turkmenistan's independence in 1992. A shift in regional governance occurred when Arkadag was established as its capital in 2022.
The region holds deep roots in traditional Turkmen carpet weaving and livestock herding, practices that shape daily life in many settlements. Visitors can observe how these customs remain central to local identity and community gatherings.
The region is best explored by personal vehicle due to large distances and limited public transportation options between settlements. Allow extra time for travel between different areas and sites.
Within the Kov Ata cave system lies an underground lake fed by naturally warm water that stays constant throughout the year. This geothermal phenomenon makes the lake a rare natural feature in the landscape.
