Odunpazarı

Odunpazarı is a historic district in Eskişehir Province with wooden houses built during Ottoman times that show traditional Turkish residential architecture. The streets and building layout follow patterns from earlier centuries and preserve this historical arrangement.

The district began as a major marketplace for firewood trading during Ottoman times, which gave it its name. This trade shaped how the area developed and was organized for centuries to come.

Museums throughout the district display meerschaum carvings, glass pieces, typewriters, and wax figures that reflect local craftsmanship traditions. These collections show the kinds of work and artistry that communities valued and practiced over time.

Walking is the best way to explore since narrow streets and wooden buildings are meant to be seen up close at a slow pace. Comfortable shoes are recommended because pathways can be uneven and different areas have elevation changes.

The area is divided into 85 separate neighborhoods, each led by an elected representative called a muhtar. These local leaders are chosen every five years and work independently from political parties.
