Artvin Province

The Artvin province extends across 7,393 square kilometers of mountainous terrain between the Black Sea coast and the Georgian border, containing steep valleys and dense forests.

The region changed control multiple times between Ottoman and Russian forces during the 19th century until its final incorporation into Turkey through the 1921 Treaty of Kars.

The province maintains a multicultural population with Georgian, Laz, and Hemshin communities, each preserving their distinct traditions, languages, and customs through generations.

The nine districts of Artvin connect through mountain roads, with the port city of Hopa providing essential access to Black Sea maritime routes.

Each June, the Kafkasör plateau transforms into an arena for traditional bull wrestling competitions, drawing participants and spectators from across the region.
