Gürün

Gürün is a district in Sivas Province in central Turkey, situated in a mountainous valley at approximately 1300 meters elevation. The area contains several lakes and ancient caves that have been inhabited since early historical periods.

The region was settled during Hittite times, with ancient caves dating back thousands of years showing signs of early occupation. These settlements indicate that the area has been a center of human activity since antiquity.

The district preserves traces of Armenian heritage through its church, which displays traditional architectural details still visible to visitors today. These structures show how different communities shaped this region over time.

The terrain is mountainous and requires good physical fitness when exploring caves and valleys. Visitors should be prepared for uneven paths and bring sturdy footwear and water.

The caves here served for centuries as natural storage spaces, where food was kept cool and animal feed was stored. Only in recent times were these practical uses abandoned as modern storage became available.
