Bahçelievler, district of Istanbul Province
Bahçelievler is a district on the European side of Istanbul and a major residential area made up of about eleven neighborhoods. It combines older family homes with modern apartment buildings, local shops, small parks, and good public transportation connections throughout the city.
The district grew from farmland and settlement roads built to connect it with the city. From the 1960s onward, the population expanded rapidly, with single-family homes gradually replaced by apartment buildings through the following decades.
The name Bahçelievler comes from Turkish and means "houses with gardens." Walking through the district today, you notice a mix of older single-family homes with yards and newer apartment buildings, reflecting how the neighborhood has transformed over time.
The district is well served by buses, minibuses, and the metro, including a dedicated Metrobus lane offering quick connections to the city center and airport. Shopping centers, hospitals, and schools are spread throughout, making most services accessible on foot or by short rides.
The district historically supplied stones for Istanbul's construction, quarried from pits here and used to build important city structures. This overlooked history shows how the area played an important economic role in the city's development.
