Cius, Ancient city in Turkey
Cius was an ancient Greek city located on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, in the area where modern Gemlik now stands. The settlement spread across hillsides overlooking the water and served as a harbor for ships and merchants.
The city was founded around the 6th century BC by Greek settlers and grew into an important trading center. Later it fell under Persian and then Roman rule, gradually losing its prominence over time.
Renowned for its educational institutions, Cius was a center of Hellenistic learning.
The remains are located near the modern city of Gemlik on Turkey's Aegean coast. Visitors can explore the archaeological sites, and a local guide can provide helpful information about the surviving structures.
The city minted its own coins bearing local symbols, which archaeologists still uncover today. These coins reveal how independent and prosperous the community was.
