Karacahisar Castle

Karacahisar Castle is a medieval fortification in Eskişehir Province, Turkey. The structure rises from a rocky plateau with thick stone walls, several defensive towers, and vantage points that look out over the valleys below.

The fortress was established during the Byzantine era and served as a frontier post against eastern raids. It later became the first stronghold taken by the Ottomans in the 13th century, marking a turning point in their expansion into Anatolia.

The fortress takes its name from the black rocks that form its foundation, a feature visible throughout the site. Visitors walking along the walls can see where different building traditions meet in the stonework and mortar.

The site is reached from Eskişehir via Odunpazarı district, where signs guide the way. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the approach involves uneven paths and some sections have loose stones.

Researchers find fragments of pottery and tools embedded in the walls, offering clues about how soldiers prepared food and maintained weapons. These objects show that the garrison managed daily tasks while watching the horizon for approaching forces.
