Ovit Tunnel, Road tunnel in İkizdere, Turkey
The Ovit Tunnel runs through Mount Ovit for approximately 14 kilometers, connecting İkizdere in Rize Province with İspir in Erzurum Province in northeastern Turkey. Two parallel tunnel tubes carry traffic in each direction, with two lanes per tube for smooth vehicle flow.
The idea for a tunnel through this mountain emerged in the 1800s during Ottoman times, but actual construction only started in 2012 and was completed in 2018. The long gap between concept and execution reflects how much time was needed for technology and resources to make the project possible.
The tunnel links farming communities on the Black Sea side with industrial centers across the mountains in Erzurum, allowing year-round movement between regions. This connection has changed how people and goods travel between these historically separated areas.
