Arkun Dam, Embankment dam and hydroelectric power station in İspir, Turkey
Arkun Dam is an embankment dam on the Çoruh River built to generate electricity in Erzurum Province. The structure uses Francis turbines to turn the flow of water into power for the surrounding region.
Construction of the dam started in 2011 as part of a broader hydroelectric development plan for the Çoruh River. The project followed earlier dam projects designed to modernize power supply across eastern Turkey.
The Arkun Dam represents Turkey's commitment to renewable energy infrastructure, integrating power generation capabilities within the Erzurum Province landscape.
The dam sits in a mountainous area and is accessible from multiple points depending on local road conditions. Visitors should prepare for changing weather, as winter can make some access routes more difficult.
The facility actually combines two separate power plants at different locations, one at the dam itself and another downstream, to make better use of the water's energy. This dual-site approach allows more electricity to be drawn from the same water flow.
