Sanchong District, Administrative district in New Taipei City, Taiwan
Sanchong is an administrative area in the western part of New Taipei City, stretching across a compact zone recognized as one of the most densely settled parts of Taiwan. Numerous mid-rise residential buildings share narrow streets with local shops, schools, and several parks that give structure to the urban environment.
The settlement grew along waterways that attracted early farming communities and facilitated trade with nearby areas. Official status shifted several times during the second half of the 20th century, as the region moved from a rural township into a fully integrated urban district.
The name refers to an old river marker system that early settlers used to navigate the waterways around the area. Local residents visit traditional markets and small shops tucked between modern buildings, shaping the daily routines of the neighborhood.
Rail connections make it easy to reach other parts of Taipei and the surrounding region, so visitors can explore the neighborhood comfortably on foot. Early morning and late afternoon bring heavier traffic along the main roads, while the rest of the day offers calmer conditions.
Despite the high population density, many small community spaces appear between buildings where neighbors play table tennis or practice morning exercises. These informal gathering spots emerge spontaneously in gaps originally meant for other purposes.
