Fengyi Academy, Tutorial academy in Fengshan District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan
Fengyi Academy is an educational compound with 37 rooms arranged around a central altar holding three Buddhist figures. A pair of stone drums stands near the screen wall, contributing to the traditional character of the grounds.
The academy was established in 1814 during the Jiaqing Emperor's reign and served candidates preparing for imperial examinations. It became an important educational center and was later recognized as a significant historical monument.
The building displays traditional Chinese architectural features with carved wood panels and inscribed tablets conveying lessons about behavior and propriety. These elements shape the space and reflect the values that were taught here.
You can reach the academy by taking the Kaohsiung MRT to Fongshan Station and walking east from the station. The grounds are relatively easy to visit and require no special preparations.
It is Taiwan's largest surviving Confucian teaching institution and received official recognition as a level 3 monument in 1985. This designation honors its value as one of the most important examples of Chinese educational traditions on the island.
