Maple Garden, Ecological park in Chaoyang Village, Taichung, Taiwan.
Maple Garden is an ecological park in Chaoyang Village, a neighborhood in the Xitun District of Taichung, built on a sunken landscape with wooden walkways, observation platforms, and a central lake. Native plants and trees frame the entire site, creating multiple levels for visitors to explore.
The site was initially set aside from 2005 onward as a construction zone, then converted during planning into a new type of project that combined stormwater management with green space. This redesign led to the opening in 2012, making it Taiwan's first sunken detention basin that also functions as a park.
The name Maple Garden reflects the tree species shaping the site, which brings warm colors to the sunken terrain when autumn arrives. Visitors experience the space as a living extension of everyday city life, where joggers use the wooden paths and families walk among clusters of plants.
Several entry points line Taiwan Boulevard and Chaofeng Road, so visitors can reach the site from different sides. Bus stops are close to most entrances, and a dedicated parking area on Henan Road serves those arriving by car.
The sunken design channels rainwater through several shallow basins that act as buffers during heavy rainfall and remain dry otherwise. This dual function lets visitors experience different perspectives, whether they look down from the raised edges or walk along the lower paths.
