竿蓁林溪, Brook in Tamsui District, Taiwan
Ganzhenlin Creek is a small waterway in Tamsui District that flows from Pingding Road through residential areas and crosses beneath the outer ring road. The creek continues along Zhongzheng East Road, creating a natural ribbon through the urban landscape.
The creek formed as a natural drainage system long before Tamsui became urbanized. When Provincial Highway 2 was widened in 1993, the authorities reconstructed the bridge crossing it and mistakenly recorded the waterway's name on official documents.
The name comes from a local term for Japanese silver grass that once grew abundantly beside the water. Walking along the creek, you can still sense how the landscape was shaped by these plants and the activities of people living nearby.
The waterway can be accessed from several marked paths, especially near Tamsui MRT station. Plan your visit for drier days, as the banks can become slippery after rain and reduce the ease of walking along the course.
The creek functions as a tributary feeding into the Tamsui River, making it an important part of the wider water system serving northern Taipei. Few visitors realize how this small waterway contributes to the larger ecosystem that sustains agriculture and natural life in the region.
