Meinong East Gate Tower

The Meinong East Gate Tower is a historic city gate on the eastern side of Meinong District, rising from its foundation with traditional Qing Dynasty architectural features. The structure serves as the eastern entrance to the historic town core and displays the characteristic building style of that era with its distinct details.

The gate was built in 1755 as a defensive structure protecting the eastern entrance to the town. After destruction during an 1895 uprising against Japanese forces, it underwent restoration in 1937.

The gate displays an inscription reading 'Initiation of Civilization,' reflecting the influence of Hakka merchants and local leaders who shaped the structure across generations. This inscription shows how important the tower was to the community's identity and pride.

The monument is located on the eastern side of the district near the town center and is easily reached on foot. The site is best visited during daytime to fully appreciate the architectural details.

During the Pacific War, the structure housed a bell that served as an air-raid warning signal for the local population. This bell was a vital part of the community's alert system during that dangerous period.
