Nanhua Reservoir, Water reservoir in Nanhua District, Tainan, Taiwan
Nanhua Reservoir is a large water storage facility located in Nanhua District, Tainan, created by a dam that blocks a river. The structure stands 87 meters tall and spans more than half a kilometer, forming a substantial body of water that holds around 158 million cubic meters.
The dam was built between the late 1980s and mid-1990s to secure water supply for southern Taiwan. The project took around five years to complete and became a key piece of regional infrastructure.
The reservoir area incorporates traditional elements of local communities, with designated spaces for community gatherings and seasonal celebrations throughout the year.
The area around the reservoir is open for walking and nature observation, though some sections of the dam itself may be restricted for safety reasons. The cooler months offer the most comfortable conditions for a visit, with clearer views and more pleasant weather.
A special diversion system channels water carrying heavy sediment away from the main basin, reducing the buildup of silt. This technique helps maintain the storage capacity of the reservoir over time.
