Novobohorodytska Fortress

Novobohorodytska Fortress is a 17th-century military stronghold that preserves remains of earthen ramparts, defensive ditches, and artillery emplacements across an expansive site. The ruins display the interconnected system of fortifications designed to command the surrounding territory.

A Dutch engineer established this fortification in the late 1600s as part of Russian territorial expansion toward southern waterways. The site was built atop an earlier settlement that had existed since the 1500s.

The site reflects the way Cossack and military communities coexisted within its walls, with spaces designed for both garrison life and civilian activity. Walking through the grounds reveals how defense and daily routines were intertwined in this frontier settlement.

The site is largely open to visit and features informational signage explaining the layout of the structures. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain is uneven and remains are scattered across a large area.

Archaeological digs have uncovered thousands of artifacts revealing the daily lives of Cossack and military residents. These findings provide rare insights into personal belongings and daily routines of inhabitants spanning multiple centuries.
