Shuldan

Shuldan is a cave monastery near Ternivka containing two stone churches and roughly twenty rooms carved across two levels into the mountain cliffs. The structure extends vertically into the rock, with passages and chambers woven into the natural cave system.

This site was established in the eighth century by Byzantine monks fleeing persecution during the iconoclastic period under Emperor Leo III. The location served as a refuge for religious communities across many centuries.

The rooms inside served both spiritual and practical purposes, showing how monks organized their daily routines within the stone walls. These spaces reflect the way people adapted to living within a mountain, blending faith with survival.

Reaching the entrance means climbing steep paths carved into the mountainside, so wear sturdy footwear and take your time with each step. Bring a flashlight or headlamp since the cave passages grow dark deeper inside, and watch your head in low-ceilinged areas.

The cave chambers naturally echo and amplify sound, a feature that matches the name Shuldan, meaning resounding echo in the local language. Walking through the passages lets you experience this acoustic property directly as you move between spaces.
