Mid Devon, Administrative district in Devon, United Kingdom
Mid Devon is an administrative district in central Devon, England, with Tiverton as its main town alongside Crediton and Cullompton. The district covers a large rural area with scattered villages and a few market towns that serve the surrounding countryside.
The district was formed in 1974 when several older local administrative areas around Crediton and Tiverton were merged together. Before that, the towns in the area had grown mainly through the wool and cloth trade, which shaped much of the local architecture still visible today.
The Grand Western Canal in Tiverton offers visitors horse-drawn barge rides and walking paths to experience the waterway's leisure heritage. The canal has been central to local recreation and outdoor activities for generations.
Tiverton is the best base for visiting the district, as it has the most services, shops, and public facilities in one place. For the more rural parts of the district, having your own transport is helpful since connections between villages can be limited.
Coldharbour Mill in Uffculme is a former wool and cloth factory where original 19th-century spinning and weaving machines are still demonstrated in working order. It is one of the few mills in England where the full production process can still be shown running as it once did.
