Langley Air Force Base, Military air base in Hampton, Virginia, United States
Langley Air Force Base is a military air installation in Hampton, Virginia, stretching along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline. The facility includes runways, hangars, command buildings and residential quarters spread across flat, partly wooded terrain.
The base was founded in 1916 and ranks among the earliest permanent facilities of American air forces. Over the following decades it became a testing ground for new aircraft technology and served as a training site for thousands of pilots during World War II.
The installation takes its name from Samuel Pierpont Langley, an aviation pioneer who experimented with early flying machines in the late 1800s. Today the base serves military families with housing, schools and recreation centers, and occasionally opens for public events that let civilians observe Air Force daily life.
Visitors without military credentials need advance registration at the visitor control center and must pass a background check. During your visit, photography restrictions apply across much of the facility, and access to operational areas remains tightly controlled.
The grounds host the Air Combat Command, which directs most American fighter and reconnaissance aircraft worldwide. The base sits right next to NASA Langley Research Center, where engineers use wind tunnels and simulators for future aerospace projects.
