Stowe, Mountain resort town in Lamoille County, US
Stowe is a town in Lamoille County, Vermont, United States, sitting at 295 meters (970 feet) elevation and covering 186 square kilometers (72 square miles) between Mount Mansfield and the Worcester Range. The town maintains over 160 kilometers (100 miles) of municipal roads and connects through Vermont Routes 108 and 100.
After its charter in 1763 by Governor Benning Wentworth, the settlement evolved from a farming community into a summer resort during the 19th century. Winter tourism gained momentum in the first half of the 20th century and shaped the town's ongoing development.
The Vermont Ski Museum displays collections that trace the development of skiing in the region from 1933 onward. Visitors can see equipment and documents that show how winter sports evolved here over the decades.
The town offers numerous lodging options, including hotels, inns, and rental cabins, spread along the two main routes. Infrastructure remains accessible year-round, allowing both summer and winter activities throughout the area.
The Stowe Recreation Path stretches 8.5 kilometers through the valley and has offered year-round opportunities for walking, cycling, and cross-country skiing since its completion in 1989. The path runs alongside a stream and through meadows, keeping the surrounding mountains in view.
