San Juan Hill, Former residential district in Upper West Side, Manhattan, United States.

San Juan Hill was a residential neighborhood on the Upper West Side of Manhattan that extended between West 59th and West 65th Streets, spanning from Amsterdam Avenue to West End Avenue. The area featured densely packed residential buildings and various entertainment venues that shaped daily life for those who lived there.

The area took its name from a military regiment that fought in a major conflict at the end of the 19th century. This naming connected the neighborhood to that historical event and shaped how residents understood their community's identity.

The neighborhood hosted a thriving music and entertainment scene in the early 20th century where artists gathered and created new forms of expression. The residents who lived there shaped the area's creative identity through their work and gatherings.

Very little of the original buildings from this era remain standing today, as the neighborhood underwent large-scale redevelopment in the mid-20th century. Visitors interested in learning about the past can seek out the few remaining structures and study the area's history through various sources.

The Phipps Houses on West 63rd Street represent one of the few original buildings still standing from that era. These structures embodied early efforts to provide affordable housing for working families in the city.
