Mohawk River, Major tributary river in New York, United States.

The Mohawk River is a major tributary flowing through central New York, passing several towns before joining the Hudson River. The waterway today features dams and locks that control water levels for shipping and power generation.

During the colonial period, this waterway served as the main passage through the Appalachian Mountains, enabling trade between settlers and local communities. This role made the valley a hub where different worlds met and exchanged goods.

The valley was home to the Mohawk people, one of the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, who settled here for generations. Their heritage remains visible in local place names and the communities that continue along the water today.

The river is accessible through several waterfront parks and public areas, especially near the larger cities along its path. Most sections have walking trails or viewpoints where visitors can observe the water and the surrounding landscape.

Near its mouth lies Cohoes Falls, a powerful waterfall formed where the river meets a geological fault line. This dramatic drop marks a striking transition in the landscape and has been a notable landmark for centuries.
