Tribute in Light, Light memorial in Lower Manhattan, United States
This memorial stands in Lower Manhattan and consists of two vertical beams projected into the night sky by 88 searchlights mounted on a parking garage rooftop. The beams reach several miles into the air and remain visible from many parts of the city and surrounding boroughs.
First switched on March 11, 2002, this installation was created to honor those killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001. It has returned each year since, becoming a recognized tradition that draws attention worldwide.
The twin columns evoke the towers that once stood here, creating a quiet moment each year on September 11 from evening until morning. People gather nearby or watch from across the water to remember those who died and to pause in their own way.
The beams appear after dark and remain visible throughout the night, offering clear views from waterfront locations across the harbor. Good vantage points include the Brooklyn shoreline, the Staten Island ferry, and several spots along the New Jersey coast.
Throughout the night, bird observers watch the beams and ask operators to turn off the lights briefly when large groups of migrating birds fly into the columns. These pauses protect the birds from disorientation and help them continue their journey.
