Indianapolis Zoo, Zoological park and aquarium in White River State Park, Indianapolis, United States
Indianapolis Zoo is a zoological park and aquarium located in White River State Park in Indiana. The facility organizes its exhibits around biomes such as deserts, forests, oceans, and plains, providing homes for more than 1,400 animals representing around 235 species.
The facility opened in 1964 at George Washington Park and moved to its current location in White River State Park in 1988. This relocation allowed for expansion of the grounds and the development of new conservation programs.
The institution earned triple accreditation as a zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden, marking its commitment to education and environmental preservation.
The grounds cover roughly 64 acres (26 hectares) and include the White River Gardens, which feature around 50,000 plants from nearly 3,000 species. Visitors find marked pathways connecting the different themed areas, allowing for a full tour of the entire facility.
The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center provides orangutans with multiple cables and platforms that let them move independently between indoor and outdoor spaces. The primates occasionally engage in vocal communication exercises with visitors at designated observation points.
