AT&T Building, Commercial skyscraper in downtown Indianapolis, United States
The AT&T Building at 240 North Meridian Street is a 22-story office tower reaching approximately 321 feet tall, housing telecommunications and office operations. It connects internally to an adjacent building, forming an integrated workspace complex in the downtown area.
Designed by Kurt Vonnegut Sr., the Art Deco structure was completed in 1932 as the Indiana Bell headquarters, replacing an earlier 1907 building on the same site. This marked a significant modernization of the city's telephone infrastructure.
The building shows how central telecommunications became to Indiana's early industrial life through its bold scale and design. Its architecture still reflects the era when telephone infrastructure drove economic growth in the city.
The building is located in the heart of downtown and is accessible through multiple entrances with direct connections to adjacent blocks. Keep in mind that this is an active office building with limited public access to most areas.
During construction, engineers moved the original telephone exchange building about 52 feet south while keeping it fully operational for 600 staff members. This feat remains a remarkable engineering accomplishment of its era.
