North District, Administrative district in northern Gran Colombia, Venezuela.
The North District was a large administrative region stretching from the Caribbean coast to the Orinoco River, encompassing significant settlements and varied terrain. The area was divided into several provinces and departments with different climates and geographical characteristics.
The district was established in 1824 during the administrative reorganization of Gran Colombia under Simón Bolívar as one of twelve major divisions. It lasted only seven years before the union dissolved in 1831 and territories regained their independence.
The district was home to diverse populations with distinct local crafts and trading practices. People lived in rural villages and developing towns, each maintaining its own economic activities and social connections.
The district contained three major commercial centers that served as administrative hubs. Visitors and merchants used coastal ports and river routes to move between the different provinces.
The territory included a group of Caribbean islands that served as trading points and strategic maritime positions. This island community remained somewhat isolated and developed differently from the mainland areas.
