Margarita Island, Caribbean island in Nueva Esparta, Venezuela.
Margarita Island is an island in Nueva Esparta and the Federal Dependencies in Venezuela covering roughly 390 square miles with a coastline that forms many sheltered bays. The two main sections are connected by a narrow strip of land that separates a lagoon from the open sea.
European explorers arrived in the late 15th century and soon began harvesting pearls from the shallow waters. Attacks by seafarers from northern Europe marked the following centuries until production declined and other industries gained importance.
The name refers to a pearl discovered here during the colonial period. Today families visit the beaches to spend weekends and eat fresh fish in small restaurants along the water.
The airport is located in the south and connects the island with the mainland and other destinations. Ferries depart regularly from several harbors and offer another way to arrive.
Two small hills rise from the lagoon and serve as landmarks for fishermen and visitors. The shape reminds some of natural domes standing out in the shallow water.
