Hưng Yên, Province in Red River Delta, Vietnam
Hưng Yên is a province in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam, sitting between Hanoi and Hải Phòng. The landscape consists of flat fields, canals, and riverbeds that thread through the entire area and supply water to the rice paddies.
The region was part of ancient Giao Chi and became an official province in 1831. During French colonial rule, it underwent several administrative changes before taking its current form in 1968.
The name comes from an administrative district established during the Nguyễn dynasty. Traditional villages dot the flat countryside, where craftspeople still dry longan fruits using old methods and turn them into local specialties.
Highway 5 runs through the area and connects the surrounding cities to one another. Visitors wanting to explore the villages and fruit orchards should use the smaller side roads that pass through the farmland.
Cape longan fruits grow here, known for their thin skin and thick pulp. Only members of the royal court were once allowed to eat this particular variety, which remains a sought-after product of the region today.
