Vinh Moc tunnels, Underground tunnel network in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.

The three-level tunnel system extends two kilometers beneath the earth, containing living spaces, kitchens, wells, and medical facilities for village residents.

Between 1966 and 1972, local villagers excavated these tunnels to protect themselves from extensive American bombing campaigns during the Vietnam War.

The tunnel network demonstrates Vietnamese engineering capabilities, as residents created an underground community that sustained daily life during wartime conditions.

Visitors can explore the tunnels through guided tours departing from Hue city, with electric lighting installed to facilitate navigation through the complex.

Throughout the war period, seventeen children were born inside these tunnels, while the complex protected over ninety families from aerial bombardment.

Military and prison sites of the Vietnam war

Vietnam preserves numerous military and prison sites that bear witness to the conflicts between 1955 and 1975. These facilities include defensive tunnel networks, converted colonial prisons, combat bases, and memorials. Visitors can trace the progression of the conflict across different regions of the country, from the Mekong Delta to northern provinces and the central highlands. Notable locations include the Vinh Moc tunnels, where 60 families lived underground during bombings; Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi, which recounts the country's prison history; and the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City with its collections of equipment and documents from the era. The Khe Sanh base offers insight into military operations conducted near border areas, while the Son My memorial commemorates civilian casualties. These sites provide a direct perspective on a period that has significantly shaped Vietnam’s history and help visitors understand the ground realities beyond broad narratives.

Vietnam destinations: temples, caves, islands

Vietnam extends more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from mountain regions in the north to the Mekong Delta in the south, offering travelers a wide range of natural and historical sites beyond urban centers. The country includes Buddhist temples like Bai Dinh and Thien Mu Pagoda, cave systems such as Son Doong and Hang En, and rice terraces at Y Ty and Hoang Su Phi. Geographic features span from limestone formations in Ninh Binh to coastal areas at Phu Quoc and Ly Son islands, and waterfalls at Ban Gioc along the Chinese border. Historical sites document different periods of Vietnamese history. The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi preserves royal palace remains, while Po Nagar Cham Towers in Nha Trang date to the 7th century. My Son Sanctuary in Quang Nam holds temple ruins from the Champa civilization, and Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City served as an underground network during the Vietnam War. The Mekong Delta in the south consists of waterways, floating markets and traditional villages, while Mui Ne sand dunes and Lang Co Beach present different coastal landscapes.
