Socotra International Airport, airport in Yemen
Socotra International Airport is a small aerodrome in Hidaybu District on Socotra Island in Yemen and serves as the only air access to the island and nearby islands. The facility has a single asphalt runway exceeding 3000 meters in length, a modest terminal building, and basic facilities for passengers and cargo operations.
The airport opened in July 1999 and replaced the time-consuming and unreliable boat journey, especially during monsoon seasons. Since its establishment, the facility has experienced multiple changes in administration, including military presence from foreign forces, reflecting the political complexity of the region.
The airport reflects the island's isolation and simplicity, which visitors notice immediately upon arrival. The local population relies on it as a vital link to the outside world, especially when ships cannot travel due to rough sea conditions.
The facility operates mainly during daytime in good weather, as the runway lacks night lighting and flights often cancel or delay during rain. Travelers should expect possible delays, especially during the rainy season from June to September.
The airport sits about 13 kilometers west of Hadibu in a rugged mountain landscape at only 45 meters elevation and is a crucial hub for international shipping routes between the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. This strategic position makes it as important to global trade shipping as it is to the local population.
