Shabwah Governorate

Shabwah Governorate covers 47,728 square kilometers of territory between Hadhramaut, Abyan, Al Bayda, and Marib, with Ataq as its capital city.

The region contains remains of the ancient city of Shabwa, which served as the capital of the Hadhramaut Kingdom until its destruction in the 3rd century AD.

The governorate maintains traditional economic activities such as agriculture, beekeeping, and fishing, contributing to Yemen's agricultural production through fruit and vegetable cultivation.

The territory comprises 17 administrative districts, with facilities including public hospitals, educational institutions, and oil production infrastructure managed from the capital Ataq.

French archaeological teams have documented multiple temples and a royal palace named Shugair within the ancient city walls, mentioned by classical writers Pliny and Strabo.
