Jabal Bura, Mountain in Al Hudaydah Governorate, Yemen.
Jabal Bura is a granite mountain in Al Hudaydah that rises to 1,437 meters above sea level with contrasting landscapes on each side. The western slopes feature dense tropical vegetation, while the eastern face is marked by agricultural terraces built into the hillside.
The mountain was added to UNESCO's Tentative List for World Heritage in 2002, recognizing its combined natural and cultural importance. This recognition reflects the site's significance as a place where geography and human settlement have developed together.
The communities on the eastern slopes maintain distinct traditions and clothing styles, living in hamlets scattered across the agricultural terraces. Daily life here is deeply rooted in farming practices and the people's connection to the land.
The eastern side is accessible via an expanding road network connecting various hamlets across the terraces. The western slopes are considerably harder to reach, with thick vegetation making any path difficult to navigate.
As you climb, five distinct ecological zones reveal themselves, from banana plantations at lower elevations to durum wheat near the peak. This diversity develops because of the mountain's height and shows how agricultural practices adapt to each altitude.
