Miradouro do Pico do Ferro, Panoramic viewpoint in São Miguel, Portugal
Miradouro do Pico do Ferro is a scenic viewpoint at 570 meters elevation offering a complete view of Furnas Valley, its thermal springs, and the volcanic lake below. The platform provides an unobstructed perspective on this geothermally shaped landscape with its characteristic steam columns and natural hot springs.
The viewpoint emerged in the 19th century as a strategic observation location where locals monitored volcanic activity and thermal manifestations. This vantage point allowed them to track changes in the geothermal landscape and watch over the safety of settlements in the valley below.
Local residents gather at the viewpoint during celebrations to observe traditional cooking methods using underground geothermal heat in Furnas Valley.
The site includes paved parking and informational panels about local geology, providing insight into the volcanic history of the region. Visitors can also start a four-hour hiking trail from here that leads through thermal areas toward Caldeiras.
More than 30 thermal springs are visible from this point and continuously send steam into the air. This phenomenon shows that volcanic activity in the region persists to this day and underground thermal systems remain active.
