Copou Park, Public park in Iași, Romania
Copou Park is a large green space in Iași filled with silver linden trees, ash trees, and maples, along with shrubs like forsythia, jasmine, and lilac spread throughout. The Lions Obelisk monument stands at the center, designed by Gheorghe Asachi, and busts of notable Romanians line the main pathways.
The park began as a planned green space between 1833 and 1834 under Moldavian ruler Mihail Sturdza. It grew significantly and reached its maximum size of 19 hectares by the end of the 1800s.
The park displays monuments honoring Romanian cultural figures, including busts placed throughout the pathways that visitors encounter during their walk. These statues create focal points that break up the greenery and tell visitors about people who shaped the nation's artistic heritage.
The park is easily reached by public transportation, with tram and bus stops near several entrance points. Visitors can walk the grounds at their own pace along well-maintained pathways during regular opening hours.
The park preserves the Eminescu Linden Tree, a historic tree where the national poet Mihai Eminescu wrote many of his works during the 1800s. This ancient specimen remains a living connection to the poet's creative life and the nation's literary past.
