Valea lui David, nature reserve in Iasi, Romania
Valea lui David is a protected nature reserve near Iași covering about 50 hectares and hosting ancient steppe vegetation. The terrain features gentle hills and valleys with special microclimates that support dry grassland vegetation and rare plant species.
The area gained scientific recognition in the 1950s and was officially declared a nature reserve in 1969. The protected status was reconfirmed in the 1990s and 2000s to safeguard the steppe vegetation and rare species from degradation.
The meadow carries the name of a geologist and university professor who studied this area intensively. Locals view it as a natural heritage that reflects the ancient steppe landscape of Moldavia.
Access is via a narrow road from the E583 highway west of Iași toward Târgu Frumos, crossing gentle hills and running alongside a river. Metal signs mark the protected area, though some markers may be damaged over time.
The meadow is known for the rare steppe viper, Vipera ursinii moldavica, with over 570 individuals representing one of the highest population densities in Romania. Though difficult to spot, their presence makes this reserve crucial for European conservation.
