Najmiddin kubro maqbarasi, 13th-century Sufi mausoleum in Old Urgench, Turkmenistan.
Najmiddin Kubro Mausoleum is a 13th-century burial structure in Old Urgench with three interconnected chambers topped by dome roofs. The rooms feature geometric tile patterns in white, blue, and brown throughout their surfaces.
The mausoleum memorializes Sheikh Najmiddin Kubro, a religious leader who died in 1221 while defending the city and had founded the Kubraviyya Sufi community. The structure was built afterward to preserve his memory.
The interior combines Central Asian and Persian building traditions, with carved plaster decorations and text inscriptions on the walls that visitors can observe while moving through the chambers.
Visitors enter through an ornately carved wooden doorway into the main chamber containing the central tomb and connecting to smaller rooms. It is best to explore the interior spaces slowly to observe all the detailed work.
The interior dome rests on a sixteen-sided drum decorated with carved plaster stalactites, a design detail that later builders across the region copied and adapted. This feature made the structure an influential model for other construction projects in Khwarezm.
