Guanyuan, Mountain viewing point in Fushi Village, Taiwan
Guanyuan is a mountain viewing point along the Central Cross-Island Highway in Fushi Village, Taiwan, positioned at around 2,580 meters above sea level. It sits beside a gas station with a parking area that gives direct views over the Liwu River valley below.
In the 1930s, the area was used as a Japanese military post to monitor indigenous movements in the surrounding mountains. That period shaped the early infrastructure along this section of the mountain route.
The location reflects how different communities coexist in the mountain landscape, with traditional routes and passage ways that indigenous groups used for generations. Walking through this area reveals the layered presence of the people who shaped the mountain paths long before modern highways were built.
The parking area beside the gas station is the easiest starting point, putting the viewpoint within a short walk. Early morning is generally the best time to visit, before clouds or haze begin to form over the valley.
On some mornings, sunlight warms the moisture rising from the surrounding forests and thick clouds fill the valley below, so the viewpoint seems to sit above a sea of white. This is more common after rain, when the air holds more water.
