Bakhmut Raion, Administrative district in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine
Bakhmut Raion is an administrative district in northeastern Donetsk Oblast covering around 1,687 square kilometers. It comprises seven municipal units that encompass both urban centers and rural settlements spread across the territory.
The district was established in 1923 and carried the name Artemivsk Raion for many decades following Soviet tradition. In 2016, it was renamed Bakhmut Raion as part of Ukraine's decommunization reforms.
The district brings together urban and rural communities with distinct ways of life. People here shape the character of the place through local traditions and how they use their spaces.
The district is organized into seven municipal units, each operating its own local services and administrative functions. Visitors should be aware of this decentralized structure, as services and access points may vary depending on which municipality they are visiting.
The district was historically known by a different official name before its 2016 renaming as part of broader national reforms. This change reflects significant shifts in how the region identifies itself beyond administrative boundaries.
